Why you can't hear if you're off-key

You hear your own voice partly through the bones of your skull, so it sounds different to you than to everyone else. That's why it's so hard to tell by ear whether you're hitting the note — and why voice teachers tell you to record yourself and listen back. Seeing your pitch in real time is even more direct.

How the pitch trainer works

OnPitch turns the melody of a song into notes and shows them on a piano roll, like in a music editor. As you sing, your voice is drawn over the notes as a line, and every note is rated Perfect, Good, Not bad or Miss — you see instantly whether you're sharp, flat or spot on.

After the song you get a summary: your points, the weakest phrases and whether you tend to sing sharp or flat. Click a phrase and the song jumps right to it, so you can practice exactly that bit.

Practice on songs you actually like

Scales and warm-ups are useful but get boring fast. Practicing on your favorite songs keeps you going. Upload a song, shift the key by up to 6 semitones to suit your range, and repeat the hard phrase while watching your voice line. On tricky parts you can bring the original vocal back and sing along with it, then take it away.

Your progress is saved: the history shows how your points grow from one attempt to the next, and you can overlay earlier attempts on the notes in different colors to compare. It's also a karaoke game with points →

Tips for singing more in tune

• Sing with headphones: the scoring is more accurate and the delay smaller.
• Don't strain for notes out of reach — lower the key by 1–2 semitones.
• Work through the song phrase by phrase, starting with the ones the summary marks as weakest.
• Run the latency calibration once, so your voice line lines up with the notes in time.
• Sing the same song a few days in a row and compare your attempts.
